Michael Otterman is a human rights consultant and author who has extensive experience investigating and advocating against human rights abuse— with particular focus on torture, terrorism and displacement.
The co‐author of Erasing Iraq: The Human Costs of Carnage and author of American Torture: From the Cold War to Abu Ghraib and Beyond, willl talk about his work in conversation with celebrated New Zealand journalist Ingrid Leary.

May 1st 2010 marks the seven‐year anniversary of George W Bush’s proclamation of the endof hostilities in Iraq and the infamous ‘Mission Accomplished’ message. Mike Otterman’sbook, Erasing Iraq, outlines those ‘accomplishments’ at over one million Iraqi dead, fivemillion refugees, and utter decimation of an entire culture and way of life that willreverberate for generations. He shows in unparalleled detail the devastating human cost ofthe past two decades of American intervention in Iraq, and argues that western governments and the mainstream media continue to ignore or play down the human costsof the war on Iraqi citizens. In‐depth interviews with Iraqi refugees in Syria, Jordan andWestern countries provide a comprehensive and moving account of the Iraqi people’stragedy rarely heard. He discusses the tragedy of Iraq with chair Sean Plunket.

Adrian Wooldridge, Schumpeter columnistfor The Economist, examined how and why religion is booming around the world andrevealed its vast effects on the global economy, politics and culture in his book God isBack (co‐authored with Economist editor John Micklethwait). Michael Otterman’s book onthe impact on the Iraqi people of the war, Erasing Iraq, and Antony Loewenstein’s analysisin My Israel Question of the ongoing conflict in Israel/Palestine can’t escape the elephant inthe room. What are the human costs of the conflict in Iraq? Otterman and Hil will present a human portrait of the Iraqi Diaspora as told by those who experienced it first-hand: Iraqis themselves. For their new book, Erasing Iraq (Pluto 2010), Otterman visited Syria and Jordan to speak with Iraqi refugees about their lives before, during and after the 2003 US-led invasion. Richard Hil travelled to Sweden where he interviewed members of the world’s largest Iraqi exile community outside the Middle East. Otterman and Hil will recount the real world experiences of many of the Iraqis they met, plus contextualize the current five-million-plus Iraqi refugee crisis with relevant history of the conflict.

Panel Discussion on Psychologist Participation in CIA/Pentagon Torture
PRESS RELEASE
A panel discussion on the involvement of psychologists in torture will be held on Sunday, August 22, at 3:00 PM in the Red Room Theater, 85 East 4th Street, NYC. The discussion will follow the 1:00 PM performance of Alternative Methods at the First Floor Theater at La MaMa, 74A East 4th Street. The panel will feature the full cast of Alternative Methods, director Josh Liveright, playwright Patricia Davis, plus three experts on torture: Michael Otterman, human rights consultant and author of American Torture and Erasing Iraq: the Human Costs of Carnage; Steven Reisner, Ph.D, an eminent psychologist who has led his field in opposing the involvement of psychologists in torture and calling for accountability; and, Nathaniel Raymond, director of Physicians for Human Rights’ Campaign Against Torture and the organization’s lead investigator into the role of health professionals in American interrogation policy. Other experts will be announced as they are confirmed.
In addition to the August 22 performance, Alternative Methods will be performed at LaMama as part of the New York International Fringe Festival on: Sunday, August 15 at 8:15; Friday, August 20 at 5:30 PM; Wednesday, August 25 at 8:15 PM; and Saturday, August 28 at 9:45 PM. The play just finished a successful run in Washington, DC, at the Capital Fringe Festival, where the Washington City Paper called it “very well written and performed . . . very successful.“ The DC Theater Scene called the play “interesting and thought-provoking,” commended the “outstanding, all-equity cast,” and selected the play for its Social Consciousness Award.
